Word before World 100 Devotions to Put Jesus First by Gretchen Saffles - Tyndale House Publishers

Word before World 100 Devotions to Put Jesus First by Gretchen Saffles - Tyndale House Publishers

The author seems authentic, she is committed to her cause and it is admirable how she expresses in this 100 devotions how she loves the word. Her invitation is loud and clear to put God´s message first in your life. She inspired me to get deeper and be constant in my journey digging in the Word. Any woman could benefit or get inspired by this content.

Description

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1)
When you think about your life and what you value, what would you put first? When you read God’s Word, are you doing so out of duty or out of a desire to delight in your Savior? When all we give Jesus is our leftovers, fear overwhelms our peace and worry clouds our vision.

Gretchen Saffles knows what it’s like to struggle to put Jesus first daily. During a season of spiritual discouragement, she learned that pursuing God is ultimately not a self-help journey, but rather it’s a Spirit-led surrender. This discovery led her to a simple phrase that helped her reframe how she desired to spend her time, start her days, and shape her mindset: Word before World. This three-word statement has become her morning manifesto, her afternoon anthem, and her evening comfort. When she practiced looking first to Jesus, she realized that while God’s Word never changes, yet it always changes us.

In Word before World you’ll discover ways to:
  • Conquer the daily distractions that get in the way of time with God
  • Develop a daily rhythm of seeking Jesus
  • Set aside your phone, lists, and plans in order to seek direction and nourishment in God’s Word instead
  • Transform your worldview, schedule, dreams, and desires to align with God’s purpose for your life.
Cultivate a deep love for God in this 100-day devotional journey to experience God’s faithfulness and goodness. Put God’s Word before the distractions of this world, believing that he will meet your every need.

New Morning Mercies for Teens A Daily Gospel Devotional by Paul David Tripp - Crossway

New Morning Mercies for Teens A Daily Gospel Devotional by Paul David Tripp - Crossway

This devotional for adults is by far one of my favorites.  I´m beyond excited to have it available for my teens! Tripp is one of my favorites so it was almost certain that he would enjoy this book. I like that it's not "feminized" or "cheesy" like many year-round reads. The themes are presented in a brief and profound way, as they are, even if they sound strong. The beauty and hope of the gospel are contained in every page. When friends ask me about devotionals appropriate for men, I think this is an excellent gift choice. It is suitable for both sexes. I´m sure both of my children (boy and girl) will enjoy this content. I´m grateful they pull it together for us to learn and enjoy.

Advance Praise

“We give deep thanks to the Lord for Paul Tripp’s unique ability to apply the gospel of grace to the ins and outs of everyday life. For many years, Tripp has shaped our own lives, family, and ministry through his biblical wisdom, generous friendship, and wonderful way with words. Now, as the parents of four daughters, we are thrilled for our girls to receive the same blessing of biblical truth, beautifully distilled in devotional form, that speaks to the joys and fears, delights and concerns, questions and hopes of their growing hearts. We pray that they, and all other young people who engage the daily rhythms of this book, will find ever-increasing joy and peace as they encounter the glory of the Savior.”

—Keith and Kristyn Getty, hymn writers and recording artists, “In Christ Alone”; authors, Sing! How Worship Transforms Your Life, Family, and Church

“Paul Tripp’s writing has been a great source of life to me. New Morning Mercies for Teens encourages those who have grown weary of the struggle, living under the weight of the world.”

—TobyMac, hip-hop recording artist; music producer; songwriter

“In an age when teens are more distracted and anxious than ever, Paul Tripp’s book is a clarion call to remember the one thing that is necessary. He urges young readers to examine the depth of their personal beliefs and consider how they will live out their faith in tangible ways as they move into adulthood. What a great resource to get teens thinking about and talking with God every day!”

—Jim Daly, President, Focus on the Family

“What a valuable application of Paul Tripp’s classic devotional for teenagers. New Morning Mercies for Teens retains the timeless and life-giving gospel message while adding reflection questions to help young Christians meditate on the truths. This book is a welcomed gospel resource for young people.”

—Cameron Cole, Founding Chairman, Rooted Ministry; coeditor, Gospel-Centered Youth Ministry; author, Therefore I Have Hope

“Solid countercultural truth! That’s what you can count on in this treasure trove for teens who are serious about nurturing their faith in God. Paul David Tripp does not serve up spiritual milk to teens but the meaty truth they need. Each day he provides a daily truth statement at the top of each day’s devotional. That single daily sentence alone is worth the price of this book.”

—Dannah Gresh, bestselling author, Lies Young Women Believe and the Truth That Sets Them Free

“Paul Tripp is one of the most skilled at connecting the gospel to all of life. In New Morning Mercies for Teens, he connects the everyday struggles and joys of teenagers to the hope found in the finished work of Jesus. I couldn’t be more excited to put this in the hands of my own children, and I would encourage you to do the same.”

Advance Praise

“My first thought on seeing these pages was that perhaps not since Richard Baxter penned his massive Christian Directory has a book like Ask Pastor John been offered to Christians. From the vast number of questions to which John Piper has responded over a decade of podcasting, these pages contain 750 of the most listened-to answers. And while Piper’s ministry is separated from Baxter’s by more than three centuries, a common thread binds them together—the deep-seated conviction that the God-breathed Scriptures make us ‘wise for salvation’ in the fullest sense because, in providing teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness, they are sufficient to equip us ‘for every good work’ (2 Tim. 3:15–17). The value of these pages is as evident as it is manifold. At one level, theological, pastoral, and ethical questions are assessed, analyzed, and consistently answered by bringing them to the touchstone of Scripture. But in addition, this is done with a rigorous and determined attention to both the wording and the interior logic of God’s word with a desire to help us to think God’s thoughts after him. And this in turn serves all of us as a pattern to learn and apply in our own Bible reading, and as a model that encourages us to live according to Scripture. In addition, the step-by-step care with which John Piper seeks to handle Scripture helps us—as he would wish—to discern how what he says applies in our own lives, and, indeed, where it might not. And so as a theologian he guides our understanding, and as a pastor he encourages us to grow in discernment so that we are not simply becoming automatons but are learning to think through and apply God’s word by ourselves, for ourselves, and to ourselves. We owe a debt of grateful thanks to John Piper for the labor of love and devotion of time and pastoral care this book reflects, and to his long-time colleague Tony Reinke, who—from an archive of over two million words!—has expertly selected and edited these pages. Here is one of those rare contemporary books that can be described as ‘should be in every Christian home,’ and to which we can turn again and again for guidance from God’s word, encouragement in Christ, and challenge to walk according to the Spirit.”

—Sinclair B. Ferguson, Chancellor’s Professor of Systematic Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary; author, The Whole Christ and Worthy

“I don’t know what is more remarkable, that the Ask Pastor John podcast has nearly two thousand episodes and over 230 million listens or that Tony Reinke has distilled all that content in order to give us a guided tour of 220 hours of audio recordings. Have you ever wished you could sit down with John Piper (or any wise, seasoned pastor) and ask him all your practical, nitty-gritty questions about life, ministry, parenting, sex, Bible reading, divorce, abuse, dating, gambling, eating, drinking, movies, demons, depression, poetry, and selfie sticks? Then this is the book for you. Even if you don’t agree with Piper on every jot and tittle of application, you will find that he is always thoughtful, always careful, always pastoral, and always tied to the Bible. Read the book straight through, a little each day, or use these five hundred pages as an encyclopedia on situational ethics and practical theology. Either way, I can’t imagine any Christian who wouldn’t be helped (and fascinated) by the hundreds of topics covered in this amazing resource.”

—Kevin DeYoung, Senior Pastor, Christ Covenant Church, Matthews, North Carolina; Associate Professor of Systematic Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary, Charlotte

“Throw a hard question at John Piper and he will isolate the main challenge and address it with a sage answer, drawn from the Bible, delivered in a kind tone that lacks even a hint of hubris. He willingly answers all sorts of dilemmas, from hard Bible verses to the daily struggles of the Christian life to culturally charged questions that border on the embarrassing to the bizarre. For years I have been an avid listener because each episode draws me deeper into God’s word. Pastor John has spoken so wisely on such a wide array of topics that I am always ferreting through past episodes to learn more. But that vast archive can be daunting. With many years of experience as the host, Tony Reinke has pulled together the 750 most popular episodes from their first decade together into a single guide touching on dozens of themes. This book is an index to the podcast archive, drawing together multiple episodes on single topics, making it easy for me to find the audio I need, when I need it. As a podcast listener, I couldn’t be more pleased. I’m thankful to Reinke for compiling this encyclopedia and—now for over a decade—drawing out, documenting, and helping us all more richly benefit from America’s most beloved theologian!”

—Joni Eareckson Tada, Founder and CEO, Joni and Friends International Disability Center

“This book is a remarkable achievement, cataloging John Piper’s answers to hundreds of challenges and dilemmas in the Christian life. A modern-day Table Talk, reminiscent of Martin Luther, this book is like sitting across a table from a Bible-saturated pastor addressing issues that are timely and issues that are timeless. You likely won’t agree with every answer. I didn’t. But what I appreciate about this book is how, even when I disagreed, Pastor John pointed me back to the Scriptures and pressed my nose deeper into those pages where, through studying and savoring, I find the unerring words of life. I am thankful for this encyclopedia of wisdom and insight. It increases my love for God and his word.”

—Trevin Wax, Vice President of Research and Resource Development, North American Mission Board; Visiting Professor, Cedarville University; author, The Thrill of Orthodoxy; Rethink Your Self; and This Is Our Time

“For years, the Ask Pastor John podcast has served me as a go-to reservoir for pastoral encouragement and practical help. There is nothing else like it. If you’re serious about your joy in Jesus, turn these pages and find accessible, God-centered answers to life’s biggest questions. The book is brilliantly organized; few will sufficiently appreciate what Reinke has pulled off here.”

Untangle Your Emotions Naming What You Feel and Knowing What to Do About It by Jennie Allen - WaterBrook & Multnomah

Untangle Your Emotions Naming What You Feel and Knowing What to Do About It by Jennie Allen - WaterBrook & Multnomah

I respect her enthusiasm to keep writing and encouraging reading in her community. If you want to read a personal experience with emotions and personal stories from someone who likes to open up, this is the book for you. The shared content is very shallow if you have previous experience in this topic. If you expect more academic work, if you already know the basics about emotions, if you are a counselor or professional in mental health is better for you to find another type of material or probably go directly to deeper content. This author is honest and very easy to read, but I think she is a communicator and leader, not a writer or scholar. I found J. Alasdair Groves & Winston T. Smith work more compelling. I got this Advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The author of Get Out of Your Head provides a revolutionary path to embracing a healthy relationship with your emotions, one that leads to a life-giving connection with God and others as well as to a richer understanding of yourself.

“This book is worth thousands of dollars of counseling.”—Jonathan Pokluda, bestselling author and host of the Becoming Something podcast

How often have you heard, “Don’t let your emotions get the best of you”? But what if instead of ignoring our feelings, we noticed them, named them, and let God use them to draw us closer to Himself and others?

Many of us need to unlearn damaging messages about our emotions. We’ve been taught, for example, that emotions are untrustworthy, when, in fact, God can use them to help us see where we need His healing.

In Untangle Your Emotions, Jennie Allen uses scientific research, biblical insight, and her own story to help you

● exchange stuffing, dismissing, or minimizing your emotions for a five-step process to know what you feel and what to do about it
● debunk the myth that feelings are sinful by learning how emotional maturity leads to deeper connection with God and others
● live emotionally healthy by applying biblical wisdom and therapeutic research that works whether you self-identify as “emotional” or not
● sit with feelings that are confusing and painful by discovering the depth of God’s love and compassion for you

Feelings aren’t something to fix; they are something to feel. As we discover how to name and navigate our emotions, we’ll learn how they can draw us closer to the God who built us—soul, mind, and heart.

The Practice of the Presence of Jesus by Joni Eareckson Tada - WaterBrook & Multnomah

The Practice of the Presence of Jesus by Joni Eareckson Tada - WaterBrook & Multnomah

Bendiciones.

We live in a world of rushing, of running, where you are applauded if you produce, not if you take breaks. When someone recommends you meditate, reflect, take breaks, listen. I tell you that I spent a long time looking for Brother Lawrence's book. In many books that I respect and authors that I follow, they cited him. In conferences, podcasts and in many other places I heard references to this material, but I never found it. Something told me I should look it up and read it. It was until an Italian pastor died, who was on missions in Mexico and donated many of his books to me, that copy came, very old and worn (which gives it even more value) making it an invaluable treasure for me. Now that Joni Eareckson Tada has this book, talking about this topic as well, meditations to practice the presence of the Lord like Brother Lawrence, I knew right away that I was going to really enjoy it. If within you know that you need to grow in this practice, don't think about it and get it, this is much easier to acquire. Blessings.

Description

Discover the joy of intentionally dwelling in the presence of God as the beloved author of Joni weaves contemporary insights with the timeless wisdom of seventeenth-century monk Brother Lawrence.

"Suffering has a way of heaving you beyond the shallows of life where your faith feels ankle-deep. It casts you out into the fathomless depths of God." —Joni, from the Introduction

Brother Lawrence lived through the drudgeries of monastery kitchen duty during the turbulence of 1600s France. Joni Eareckson Tada suffered a terrible accident that broke her neck and left her paralyzed. This tragedy led her from a life of distant faith to a life as a devout Christian, and she later became a worldwide disability advocate and influencer, sharing her experiences of suffering with grace. In both their lives, they each found the secret to peace, joy, and a way of being in constant conversation with the Father . . . every day and every hour . . . practicing the presence of God.

The Practice of the Presence of Jesus ushers in wisdom from these two everyday saints, more than 400 years apart, to teach and inspire you to experience the nearness of God in your life. Through rich devotional content from Brother Lawrence’s The Practice of the Presence of God, accompanied by original art and never-before-published insights from Joni, you’ll experience a unique blend of past and present wisdom on such themes as humility, thankfulness, fear, worship, obedience, and more. Each devotion ushers you into the peace of the Good Shepherd.

Free ebook. The Five Dilemmas of Calvinism by Craig Brown. 🎁📘📖📚

🎁📘📖📚 Free ebook. The Five Dilemmas of Calvinism by Craig Brown.

After a brief survey of the historical development of the theological school now known as Calvinism and a comparison of Calvinism and Arminianism, Brown turns to a consideration of five dilemmas that Arminians typically associate with Reformed doctrines. The author then attempts to demonstrate that these "problems" are largely misunderstandings of Calvinism.

Written in a winsome and engaging style, Brown's work is an excellent primer on Calvinism and some of the critiques that have been leveled against it. As such, the book provides both apologetic help for Calvinists and answers for Arminians with honest questions.

"Craig Brown battles misunderstandings that have dogged Calvinism for long years. In so doing, he provides apologetic help for Calvinists stymied by the misinformed questions of their Arminian friends. And, of course, he kindles light for those who have never considered alternatives to the Arminian system."

Live Your Truth and Other Lies by Alisa Childers Exposing Popular Deceptions That Make Us Anxious, Exhausted, and Self-Obsessed - Tyndale House Publishers

It will always be of great encouragement and impact for me to hear stories of people who changed their worldview when they were impacted by the truth. This is the case of Alisa Childers. I like that her book is not all about "her" and "her testimony" but only important aspects are touched on so that you understand her background and how this definitely has to do with the themes she exposes. Grateful for your efforts so that the postmodern generation immersed in circles that call themselves Christian but their teachings are manipulative, false or confusing, can analyze everything and question where they stand. It is a book with important topics to question and not because it has deep topics, it is written in an extremely short, simple and understandable way, perhaps to start questioning yourself about these topics and then go to deeper and more substantial content. Let us remember that it is your effort according to what you have experienced and lived. Depending on your beliefs about whether we are "bad" or "good" some parts will also feel a little cringe... but that will make you question yourself. You can get good things from this content, don't expect perfection, nothing has it. Consider to listen this serie by her  "Another Gospel" in Revive Our Hearts

A Curious Faith The Questions God Asks, We Ask, and We Wish Someone Would Ask Us by Lore Ferguson Wilbert - Baker Academic & Brazos Press

Pub date 2 Ago 2022

Lore has a gift with words. I have followed her through the years and her last book so I knew I wanted to read this one. If you feel curious and love to sit with books, chatting about deep stuff and questions in life... you will love this book. There are several paragraphs where I felt seen and understood. What a relief God don't freak out with our questions. Thanks for writing Lore I'm praying for your next book (hopefully soon). "when the pain of life comes knocking— and it will come knocking— we need a framework that goes beyond tautological living. We need a framework that allows for big, audacious, confrontational, unanswerable questions". "..the question matters because part of our journey of faith is moving through the doubts and putting ourselves in a place where the outcome we desire is possible. Even if the place itself is powerless and even if the people around us are powerless too. Wanting to be well is just as important as doing everything we can to be well. Wanting God to answer our questions and satisfy our curiosity and solve world hunger and bring world peace is just as important as involving ourselves in the answers. There must be action to our faith". Reyna

Description

God created us to be curious. We innately wonder about the world, one another, ourselves, and our Creator. But fear of the unknown, cultural taboos, technology, or even church leaders can smother our curiosity.

Popular writer Lore Ferguson Wilbert has belonged to Christian communities that discouraged curiosity. The point of the Christian life was to have the right answers, and asking questions reflected a wavering faith. But Wilbert came to discover that the Bible is a permission slip to anyone who wants to ask questions.

Reflecting her own theological trajectory toward a more contemplative, expansive faith, Wilbert invites readers to foster curiosity as a spiritual habit. This book explores questions God asks us, questions we ask God, and questions we ask each other. Christianity is not about knowing good answers, says Wilbert, but about asking good questions--ones that foster deeper intimacy with God and others.

A Curious Faith invites readers to go beyond pat answers and embrace curiosity, rather than certainty, as a hallmark of authentic faith. Foreword by Seth Haines.

What a beautiful thing is to read about parenting but always with God's perspective. How encouraging, hopeful and challenging! This book would be a beautiful gift for parents. I felt understood, and connected with many of the examples she shared. Even when this is not a devotional book, but a parenting book, I started and finished its pages with huge gratefulness in my heart for my heavenly father. I find her voice clear, open, honest, and practical. I really enjoy Christina's content, her blog posts, and other books are a huge blessing for me and my family. I recommend you to google her, follow her content, and buy her resources. Looking forward to her future material.

Have healthy eating plans left you feeling defeated? Based on her bestseller Made to CraveLysa TerKeurst offers a new perspective to all those stuck in the cycle of losing weight and then gaining it back, equipping you with the deeper spiritual and emotional motivation you need to make lasting changes.

So often we characterize our food cravings as bad, especially when dieting has made us feel even more disappointed and discouraged. But the reality is we were made to crave. We just need to realize God created us to crave more of Him instead of misplacing that craving by overindulging in physical pleasures and unhealthy choices that will never truly satisfy.

In the midst of her own personal struggle with this, New York Times bestselling author Lysa TerKeurst invites us to embrace a new outlook that leads to enduring change. In this newly revised and condensed version of Made to Crave, Lysa encourages you to:

Break the cycle of "I'll start again Monday" and start taking steps toward consistency that lasts

Stop agonizing over numbers on the scale and make peace with your body

Replace rationalizations that lead to failure with wisdom that leads to victory

Reach your healthy goals and grow closer to God through the process

This is not a "how-to" book. This is not the latest and greatest dieting plan. This is the necessary resource to use alongside whatever healthy lifestyle plan you choose that will help you find your "want to" and lead to a spiritual satisfaction that goes far beyond the physical.

I can assure you this, probably when you read this: "insecurity, regret, failure, and shame" you may think about other people who you think may benefit from this book, you may think about family, friends or people you are counseling. BUT I´m sure that if you read it, you will find some areas to grow. This book is not divided into chapters, but into 50 devotionals. It is easy to read at fast peace, but I think you will benefit more if you start and ponder.

If you are a person who has suffered from abuse (any kind) or trauma, you will find this helpful. If you are cold and strong and get desperate with people who are not type A, outgoing, and secure you will also find this useful, because you may try to understand and have empathy with the people you love and are like that.

I really enjoy Ed Welch's books, they are clear, easy to read and useful, practical. Love the Response part at the end of each devotion. If you don´t like some days, keep reading, and I´m sure you will find other treasures ahead.

If you want to grow in your identity in Christ, and silence the ugly inner voices who haunt you, this book will be helpful.

Holier Than Thou How God’s Holiness Helps Us Trust Him by Jackie Hill Perry - B&H Publishing

Holier Than Thou How God’s Holiness Helps Us Trust Him by Jackie Hill Perry - B&H Publishing

Who can we trust?

Have you ever wondered: Who can I trust? I do. Many times. In a world stained by sin, where everything collapses and nothing is forever, where betrayal, deceit, manipulation and idolatry are the order of the day, where bad news fills the tabloids: it is a real relief to remember that There is only one good, holy, trustworthy God who sustains my life. That is what this book is about, the Holy nature of God, above all else, the human, the captivating and the fallible.

Is another book on Holiness necessary?

Does one more content on the holiness of God seem excessive to you? Will some attempt or effort be enough to encompass all that He is? I applaud the collaboration and interest of current authors, such as Jackie, to learn from the scholars of yesteryear, the fathers of the faith, theologians and time-tested writers, so that the current generation can know them as well and benefit from their contents, which perhaps otherwise would not happen. I am glad that the young author takes the challenge to write about such profound themes, such as the holiness of God. This book is different from others of hers. I hope that many will also take the time to read the Word and who you quote, it is worth it.

Is it possible to capture the Holiness of God in a book?

Trying to capture the greatness of God in a book are big words. I consider any person who embarks with his pen and letters to such sublime, infinite and eternal territories as daring. It requires fortitude and humility to know that his words will not cover everything, but still be willing to take the challenge of turning the spotlight on Him, once again, and go through the biblical passages that open our eyes to the essence of His nature, on a journey of holiness revealed in creation, in the fall and in redemption.

What do our beliefs about the holiness of God have to do with our daily lives?

Several premises and reasonings of Jackie Hill Perry revolve around the phrase of AW Tozer "What comes to mind when we think of God is the most important thing in us." She argues that people always act based on what they believe about God, that the foundation of idolatry, the sin that it engenders, and the idols that you choose to put in their place make it necessary to go to the roots of our beliefs, to empty ourselves of everything. and fill ourselves with Him, live grateful and according to His Holiness.

The author draws our attention to how "the soil on which all sin grows is unbelief", and stresses that " the foundation of our idolatry, the sin that begets all other sins, is a specific belief about God." When we understand the holiness of God, compared to people, that affects how we think of Him and determines our behavior and God consequences. That is why it is important to analyze our beliefs in light of the Bible.

About the book and its style.

"The Holy God" is a book is short and digestible. In seven chapters, it deals with various current, useful and practical topics in light of the holiness of God. You will read about moral perfection, transcendence, Idolatry, Holy Justice, Holy Vision and Contemplation that leads us to appreciate the holiness of God. Each chapter helps to understand the nature of God in comparison to ours, offering reasons to trust Him and grow in our relationship and dependence, enjoy His Holy Justice and yearn to live in holiness as well, in the end, to be able to see Him as He is. .

Jackie's style is biblical, interesting, and profound. Amid his short stories and quirky humor, he sows pearls of wisdom. Its sharpness is enjoyed, which feels so sharp in some paragraphs. The translation is very good, to my liking I prefer to read in the author's language, since it seems to me that the musicality and cadence of words is more appreciated. Being an artist of spoken poetry, you will notice that she has a peculiar cadence. The style of the authors may change as the years go by, but the eternal truths, character, faithfulness, and holiness of God are immovable and inscrutable.

Who can benefit from this reading?

I believe that this book can be useful for people of any gender and age, students or teachers, especially for:

-People whose trust and faith have been inconsistent due to various disappointments in their lives, who need to remember that God does not fail and is trustworthy.

-People whose faith has perhaps grown cold and need their wonder for God to awaken.

-People absorbed in various idols that distract and want to destroy.

-People who already love, serve and desire God, and want to make him known to others.

Throughout each page of "The Holy God" you will find the enormous beauty of God compared to any idol. His holiness makes him unique, therefore he is our justice and hope. It is my hope and prayer that this reading will help us to remain absorbed before his incomparable Holiness.

He is Holy, Holy, Holy.

And if you also ask yourself today, I remind you: Yes, we can trust him.

In the Lord I Take Refuge 150 Daily Devotions through the Psalms by Dane C. Ortlund - Crossway

In the Lord I Take Refuge 150 Daily Devotions through the Psalms by Dane C. Ortlund - Crossway

I have come to greatly appreciate the work of the Ortlunds. I don't know yet if it's their way of expressing themselves or their clarity in doing so, or their chosen content, but it makes sense to me and it's easy for me to connect with them. Although I am not much of a reader of a devotional every day, I admit that I really enjoyed this one, perhaps because of the other non-devotional content that I have read from Ortlund and that has encouraged me in my walk of faith. Enjoy this devotional if you need encouragement, comfort or consider giving it to someone else, its cover is beautiful, but even more so is the inside.

Description

In the Lord I Take Refuge invites readers to experience the Psalms in a new and refreshing way, featuring devotional content written by Dane Ortlund.

Advance Praise

“This world has beauty and delight as well as brokenness and pain. As joy and sorrow mingle together, we long for words to express both our cries for deliverance and our songs of rejoicing. Dane Ortlund’s new devotional, In the Lord I Take Refuge, invites us to commune with God through the words of the Psalms. These encouraging daily reflections will guide your prayers, refresh your heart, and strengthen your soul as you walk with God in the ups and downs of life.”

—Melissa B. Kruger, Director of Women’s Initiatives, The Gospel Coalition; author, Growing Together

“This devotional book beautifully reminds us that we need no better devotional material than the Psalms themselves. Dane Ortlund is pointing the way, serving as a wise and restrained guide to help us enter and join the prayers and praises of the psalter. He never fails to point us to Christ, the Savior who shines through the Psalms from beginning to end.”

—Kathleen Nielson, author; speaker; Senior Adviser, The Gospel Coalition

“This is a book to keep by your bed, to begin or end each day feeding on these words God has given to us to pray and sing back to him. Dane’s brief insights into each psalm help us to bridge the gap between the psalmist’s time and our own, between his battles, questions, joys, desires, and laments and our own, leading us to love and worship.”

—Nancy Guthrie, Bible teacher; author, Even Better than Eden

“Here it is! A devotional book based on the Bible’s own devotional book. It is an idea so obvious we may have missed it because—unlike our spiritual forefathers, who often read through the book of Psalms every week—we have allowed ourselves to be obsessed with the short term and the quick fix and to become devoted to the latest thing. But now the author whose Gentle and Lowly has helped so many to see Christ more clearly takes us gently by the hand to Jesus’s own devotional manual, the prayer book he loved, and the blueprint for his own life and ministry, and leads us to him all over again, day after day. Thank you, Dane Ortlund, for more treasure!”

—Sinclair B. Ferguson, Chancellor’s Professor of Systematic Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary; Teaching Fellow, Ligonier Ministries

“A book like this is hard to find: not a commentary on the Psalms but a brief model, from a trusted voice, on how to meditate on them. Come to be fed by Dane’s meditations and learn how to meditate for yourself; to take a word or phrase in context and linger over it to obtain food, in Christ, for your soul; and to enrich and deepen your own communion with Christ in the Bible’s songbook. Take up and feed.”

It is sad for me to think about all the children who are currently concerned about everything they hear in the media, virtual schools, and even with their own parents. The pandemic has helped everyone's stress and concern levels rise. This little book is a good idea to get closer to a little one and start these conversations, to see how their heart is. Sometimes they do not know how to verbalize their feelings when they are very young, they still do not have words to express with certainty how they feel and you can only detect some strange, unusual behavior. It is good to have resources and opportunities like this, to give them words, vocabulary about their emotions, and to be able to minister to their little heart. These kinds of small picture books are also a good idea to have in counseling offices.
