Pub date 17 oct 2023
An incredibly validating and tender book that treats the heavy subject of religious trauma with the deep clinical and personal care it deserves. It doesn’t just point out the wounds; it actually gives your body and mind a practical, compassionate roadmap toward finding safety again. It is a difficult read if you are involved somway somehow in this kind of pain, but I´m sure you will find benefical things to think about, for your mind and soul.

Description

"Anderson strikes a smart, balanced tone. . . . An exemplary guide to an understudied issue."--Publishers Weekly

"An exposé of the dangers of high-control religions that makes it easier to recognize and resist religious abuse."--Foreword Reviews

Religious trauma is something that happens far more often than most people realize. But religious trauma is trauma.

In When Religion Hurts You, Dr. Laura Anderson takes an honest look at a side of religion that few like to talk about. Drawing from her own life and therapy practice, she helps readers understand what religious trauma is and isn't, and how high-control churches can be harmful and abusive, often resulting in trauma. She shows how elements of fundamentalist church life--such as fear of hell, purity culture, corporal punishment, and authoritarian leaders--can cause psychological, relational, physical, and spiritual damage.

As she explores the growing phenomenon of religious trauma, Dr. Anderson helps readers embark on a journey of living as healing individuals and finding a new foundation to stand on. Recognizing that healing is a lifelong rather than a linear process, she offers markers of healing for those coming out of painful religious experiences and hope for finding wholeness after religious trauma.

Advance Praise

“A brilliant blend of anecdotal and academic, this book offers a compassionate road map for those recovering from religious trauma. Dr. Anderson offers guidance on how to put lives back together and provides a thorough resource for mental health professionals to help them counsel others in the process. Poignant and personal, this book is a must-have for anyone in the muddy aftermath of their exit from high-control or extreme religious groups.”—Sarah Edmondson, author of Scarred: The True Story of How I Escaped NXIVM, the Cult That Bound My Life

“Dr. Laura Anderson has written a must-read for those who want to deconstruct the complexity of religious trauma through a lens that is not only scientific but also compassionate. This book is for every person who has experienced shame, guilt, self-doubt, and self-hate within religious contexts.”—Yolanda Renteria, licensed professional counselor
“When Religion Hurts You is the most comprehensive, reflective, and helpful book about recovering from religious trauma and church abuse that I’ve ever read. Using research, personal experience, and her training as a therapist, Dr. Laura Anderson offers a powerful and poignant methodology toward healing. I needed to read When Religion Hurts You. Anderson’s wisdom is practical and full of empathy, personal and so very hopeful.”—Matthew Paul Turner, #1 New York Times bestselling author of What Is God Like?
“Both compassionate and wise, When Religion Hurts You is the informative guide needed when making sense of and healing from the disorienting and painful experience of religious trauma. I plan to read and reread it, and I believe it will be a book people can come back to repeatedly on their path to individual and community healing.”—Hillary L. McBride, PhD, psychologist, author, speaker, podcaster
“I remember when I first started drawing cartoons and writing posts about religious trauma long ago, so many people claimed it was rare and I was making a mountain out of a molehill. Now we know differently, and more people are talking about it. I’m so thankful such a compassionate and wise professional like Dr. Laura has provided a valuable resource that will help people not only to understand what religious trauma is but also to find a holistic path of healing beyond it.”—David Hayward, a.k.a. NakedPastor
“When Religion Hurts You is a valuable addition to the robust literature on helping people recover from trauma due to either being born into a religious group that isn’t healthy or being deceptively recruited into a religious cult. I am pleased to endorse this book and its recommendations.”—Steven Hassan, PhD, MEd, LMHC, NCC, founder and director, Freedom of Mind Resource Center Inc.

I can assure you this, probably when you read this: "insecurity, regret, failure, and shame" you may think about other people who you think may benefit from this book, you may think about family, friends or people you are counseling. BUT I´m sure that if you read it, you will find some areas to grow. This book is not divided into chapters, but into 50 devotionals. It is easy to read at fast peace, but I think you will benefit more if you start and ponder.

If you are a person who has suffered from abuse (any kind) or trauma, you will find this helpful. If you are cold and strong and get desperate with people who are not type A, outgoing, and secure you will also find this useful, because you may try to understand and have empathy with the people you love and are like that.

I really enjoy Ed Welch's books, they are clear, easy to read and useful, practical. Love the Response part at the end of each devotion. If you don´t like some days, keep reading, and I´m sure you will find other treasures ahead.

If you want to grow in your identity in Christ, and silence the ugly inner voices who haunt you, this book will be helpful.

The Pastor as Counselor The call for soul care By David Powlison - Crossway

The Pastor as Counselor. The call for soul care. By David Powlison - Crossway

This book is for men, for shepherds. I just read it because it was a gift (my husband likes David Powlison and when there are books by him I like to get them) and because although I am a woman and obviously not a pastor, I enjoy learning a lot from David. Powlison is excellent in the area of biblical counseling.

This is a short book, it has about 80 pages, you read it in a couple of sessions.

ENGLISH:

I think it is a book that serves as encouragement and exhortation for Pastors, (especially for those who do not like the area of Counseling so much and prefer to dedicate their efforts and time to other areas). It is a book that can also be very useful for people who serve in the area of Christian Counseling. Why? because when reading it you will realize the UNIQUE characteristics that direct counseling with a pastor has and not so much with an "amateur" or even with a "professional" be it a psychologist, psychiatrist, counselor, life coach, etc. It is a book that makes you value and respects the pastors who advise because what they say can be taken as from God.

With each page that turned, he thought about how many stories David Powlison would have lived to express himself that way. I also thought when reading everything he exposes, that it is sad that that area is increasingly being delegated to other people, I think that by reading it, every pastor could feel encouraged to venture out and embrace this incomparable vocation that he has. It is a unique opportunity that God has given you to intervene for the good in someone else's life.

Give thanks for your shepherd and the time he takes to listen to prayer and to get involved in the spiritual and emotional life of his sheep, his work is unique, his vocation also incomparable. Reading this can help you understand it better.

This is a book I´d love to have when I was studying counseling. And is a book I will recommend to all my classmates from now on. Edward T. Welch, and Joni Eareckson Tadda are authors that I have enjoyed through the years, so when I saw they were contributors and I had Rob Green as professor years ago, so I wanted to read the whole book. I have taken some courses that focus on children counseling before, the common drawings and figures you show to children, as usual interpretation is very subjective with some methods, in some courses I have taken I didn´t find the ideas/methods very legit or scientific to get to a children´s heart, they just consider behavior or were truly boring (treating children, pre-teens and teens as very immature creatures). Don´t get me wrong, children are indeed immature, but we don´t have to underestimate them, we can communicate and deal with hard issues with good communication, just as we do with grownups it is what Amy also explains. The wisdom and practical ideas this book have to approach a children´s heart, their attention, and what I loved the most: how to help their own parents to help them and involve in the healing/improvement process, I totally agree with that approach (obviously when the parents have mental health and are not toxic. I found that a very valuable approach in this book.

"For children, the struggles, desires, and hopes are no different than for those of us who are adults. Therefore, the counsel we provide for them should lead them to the same place—the good news of Jesus Christ".

I absolutely recommend this material and can´t way to see how these practices are going to improve future counseling sessions. I´m grateful for all the serious and devoted authors of these chapters. It is a good idea to keep this manual handy.

Encouragement and Wisdom
for Counseling Children

New manual equips counselors, parents, and pastors to boldly trust in the sufficiency of Scripture for counseling.

Some counselors are intimidated at the thought of counseling children. If the counselor primarily works with adults, he or she may feel out of their league because they don’t know where to start with relating and providing counsel on a level the child can understand. In Caring for the Souls of Children: A Biblical Counselor’s Manual (New Growth Press/August 31, 2020), editor Amy Baker along with many experienced counselors, authors and pastors help readers prepare to work with children and offer guidance on using the Word of God to help the child face specific struggles.

“The core thesis of this book is that the struggles, the desires, and the source of hope for children is no different than the struggles, desires, and source of hope for adults,” writes Baker. “While we often think that children need a different approach to counseling—and we certainly want to tailor our teaching and interaction to the understanding of the child—it’s our observation that children struggle with the same desires adults struggle with, they are lured by the same lies that adults fall prey to, and they find hope in the same source adults find hope—in our Lord and Savior.  The contributors and I want to encourage counselors and parents to boldly trust in the sufficiency of God and his word to help struggling children.”

This manual helps counselors share Christ—the way, the truth, and the life—while tailoring interactions and teachings to the understanding of children. The chapters are written by a wide range of contributors who have worked with children for many years including Baker, Julie Lowe, Marty Machowski, Jessica Thompson, Jonathan Holmes, Michael R. Emlet, Garrett Higbee, Edward T. Welch, Kevin Carson, Harvest USA, Charles Hodges, Joni and Friends, Bob Kellemen, and Pam Bauer.

Caring for the Souls of Children equips counselors, parents, pastors, and others who work children to boldly trust in the sufficiency of Scripture for counseling. This in-depth resource begins with an overview of foundational principles for counseling children and addresses a different counseling topic in each subsequent chapter. Topics addressed include a wide variety of general and specific issues that children face including anxiety, anger, abuse, suicidal thoughts and actions, self-harm, shame, grief, disability, disease, sexual identity, and many others.

Joni Eareckson Tada, founder and CEO of Joni and Friends International Disability Center shares, “In Caring for the Souls of Children, you will find a rich resource of wise insights, seasoned advice, and solid biblical guidance to help children view their limitations from God’s point of view.”

“Some books overpromise, but not this one. On all the most pressing issues in counseling (and parenting!) children, Caring for the Souls of Children delivers with grace and wisdom,” CCEF Executive Director Alasdair Groves adds.

Coming alongside struggling children can feel like an uphill battle. Yet children struggle with the same desires adults struggle with, are lured by the same lies adults fall prey to, and can find hope in the same source adults can find hope--in Jesus. This manual helps counselors share Christ--the way, the truth, and the life--while tailoring interactions and teachings to the understanding of children.

Some real-life stories are heartbreaking to me, that is why one of my goals is to read more about children and teens and to help parents to improve their relationship with them. If a person understands themselves and their unique design and purpose since they are little, and they embrace their identity in christ is less possible that they make bad decisions such as cut themselves, live licentious sexual lives, or suicide. If you are a counselor you will find it useful to find this kind of resource.
