Holier Than Thou How God’s Holiness Helps Us Trust Him by Jackie Hill Perry - B&H Publishing

Holier Than Thou How God’s Holiness Helps Us Trust Him by Jackie Hill Perry - B&H Publishing

You can read this review in Spanish in this site, where it was also published: Here

Who can we trust?

Have you ever wondered: Who can I trust? I do. Many times. In a world stained by sin, where everything collapses and nothing is forever, where betrayal, deceit, manipulation and idolatry are the order of the day, where bad news fills the tabloids: it is a real relief to remember that There is only one good, holy, trustworthy God who sustains my life. That is what this book is about, the Holy nature of God, above all else, the human, the captivating and the fallible.

Is another book on Holiness necessary?

Does one more content on the holiness of God seem excessive to you? Will some attempt or effort be enough to encompass all that He is? I applaud the collaboration and interest of current authors, such as Jackie, to learn from the scholars of yesteryear, the fathers of the faith, theologians and time-tested writers, so that the current generation can know them as well and benefit from their contents, which perhaps otherwise would not happen. I am glad that the young author takes the challenge to write about such profound themes, such as the holiness of God. This book is different from others of hers. I hope that many will also take the time to read the Word and who you quote, it is worth it.

Is it possible to capture the Holiness of God in a book?

Trying to capture the greatness of God in a book are big words. I consider any person who embarks with his pen and letters to such sublime, infinite and eternal territories as daring. It requires fortitude and humility to know that his words will not cover everything, but still be willing to take the challenge of turning the spotlight on Him, once again, and go through the biblical passages that open our eyes to the essence of His nature, on a journey of holiness revealed in creation, in the fall and in redemption.

What do our beliefs about the holiness of God have to do with our daily lives?

Several premises and reasonings of Jackie Hill Perry revolve around the phrase of AW Tozer "What comes to mind when we think of God is the most important thing in us." She argues that people always act based on what they believe about God, that the foundation of idolatry, the sin that it engenders, and the idols that you choose to put in their place make it necessary to go to the roots of our beliefs, to empty ourselves of everything. and fill ourselves with Him, live grateful and according to His Holiness.

The author draws our attention to how "the soil on which all sin grows is unbelief", and stresses that " the foundation of our idolatry, the sin that begets all other sins, is a specific belief about God." When we understand the holiness of God, compared to people, that affects how we think of Him and determines our behavior and God consequences. That is why it is important to analyze our beliefs in light of the Bible.

About the book and its style.

"The Holy God" is a book is short and digestible. In seven chapters, it deals with various current, useful and practical topics in light of the holiness of God. You will read about moral perfection, transcendence, Idolatry, Holy Justice, Holy Vision and Contemplation that leads us to appreciate the holiness of God. Each chapter helps to understand the nature of God in comparison to ours, offering reasons to trust Him and grow in our relationship and dependence, enjoy His Holy Justice and yearn to live in holiness as well, in the end, to be able to see Him as He is. .

Jackie's style is biblical, interesting, and profound. Amid his short stories and quirky humor, he sows pearls of wisdom. Its sharpness is enjoyed, which feels so sharp in some paragraphs. The translation is very good, to my liking I prefer to read in the author's language, since it seems to me that the musicality and cadence of words is more appreciated. Being an artist of spoken poetry, you will notice that she has a peculiar cadence. The style of the authors may change as the years go by, but the eternal truths, character, faithfulness, and holiness of God are immovable and inscrutable.

Who can benefit from this reading?

I believe that this book can be useful for people of any gender and age, students or teachers, especially for:

-People whose trust and faith have been inconsistent due to various disappointments in their lives, who need to remember that God does not fail and is trustworthy.

-People whose faith has perhaps grown cold and need their wonder for God to awaken.

-People absorbed in various idols that distract and want to destroy.

-People who already love, serve and desire God, and want to make him known to others.

Throughout each page of "The Holy God" you will find the enormous beauty of God compared to any idol. His holiness makes him unique, therefore he is our justice and hope. It is my hope and prayer that this reading will help us to remain absorbed before his incomparable Holiness.

He is Holy, Holy, Holy.

And if you also ask yourself today, I remind you: Yes, we can trust him.

Caring for the souls of children, a biblical counselor´s manual by editor Amy Baker - New Growth Press

This is a book I´d love to have when I was studying counseling. And is a book I will recommend to all my classmates from now on. Edward T. Welch, and Joni Eareckson Tadda are authors that I have enjoyed through the years, so when I saw they were contributors and I had Rob Green as professor years ago, so I wanted to read the whole book. I have taken some courses that focus on children counseling before, the common drawings and figures you show to children, as usual interpretation is very subjective with some methods, in some courses I have taken I didn´t find the ideas/methods very legit or scientific to get to a children´s heart, they just consider behavior or were truly boring (treating children, pre-teens and teens as very immature creatures). Don´t get me wrong, children are indeed immature, but we don´t have to underestimate them, we can communicate and deal with hard issues with good communication, just as we do with grownups it is what Amy also explains. The wisdom and practical ideas this book have to approach a children´s heart, their attention, and what I loved the most: how to help their own parents to help them and involve in the healing/improvement process, I totally agree with that approach (obviously when the parents have mental health and are not toxic. I found that a very valuable approach in this book.

"For children, the struggles, desires, and hopes are no different than for those of us who are adults. Therefore, the counsel we provide for them should lead them to the same place—the good news of Jesus Christ".

I absolutely recommend this material and can´t way to see how these practices are going to improve future counseling sessions. I´m grateful for all the serious and devoted authors of these chapters. It is a good idea to keep this manual handy.

This is the table of contents

Encouragement and Wisdom
for Counseling Children

New manual equips counselors, parents, and pastors to boldly trust in the sufficiency of Scripture for counseling.

Some counselors are intimidated at the thought of counseling children. If the counselor primarily works with adults, he or she may feel out of their league because they don’t know where to start with relating and providing counsel on a level the child can understand. In Caring for the Souls of Children: A Biblical Counselor’s Manual (New Growth Press/August 31, 2020), editor Amy Baker along with many experienced counselors, authors and pastors help readers prepare to work with children and offer guidance on using the Word of God to help the child face specific struggles.

“The core thesis of this book is that the struggles, the desires, and the source of hope for children is no different than the struggles, desires, and source of hope for adults,” writes Baker. “While we often think that children need a different approach to counseling—and we certainly want to tailor our teaching and interaction to the understanding of the child—it’s our observation that children struggle with the same desires adults struggle with, they are lured by the same lies that adults fall prey to, and they find hope in the same source adults find hope—in our Lord and Savior.  The contributors and I want to encourage counselors and parents to boldly trust in the sufficiency of God and his word to help struggling children.”

This manual helps counselors share Christ—the way, the truth, and the life—while tailoring interactions and teachings to the understanding of children. The chapters are written by a wide range of contributors who have worked with children for many years including Baker, Julie Lowe, Marty Machowski, Jessica Thompson, Jonathan Holmes, Michael R. Emlet, Garrett Higbee, Edward T. Welch, Kevin Carson, Harvest USA, Charles Hodges, Joni and Friends, Bob Kellemen, and Pam Bauer.

Caring for the Souls of Children equips counselors, parents, pastors, and others who work children to boldly trust in the sufficiency of Scripture for counseling. This in-depth resource begins with an overview of foundational principles for counseling children and addresses a different counseling topic in each subsequent chapter. Topics addressed include a wide variety of general and specific issues that children face including anxiety, anger, abuse, suicidal thoughts and actions, self-harm, shame, grief, disability, disease, sexual identity, and many others.

Joni Eareckson Tada, founder and CEO of Joni and Friends International Disability Center shares, “In Caring for the Souls of Children, you will find a rich resource of wise insights, seasoned advice, and solid biblical guidance to help children view their limitations from God’s point of view.”

“Some books overpromise, but not this one. On all the most pressing issues in counseling (and parenting!) children, Caring for the Souls of Children delivers with grace and wisdom,” CCEF Executive Director Alasdair Groves adds.

Coming alongside struggling children can feel like an uphill battle. Yet children struggle with the same desires adults struggle with, are lured by the same lies adults fall prey to, and can find hope in the same source adults can find hope--in Jesus. This manual helps counselors share Christ--the way, the truth, and the life--while tailoring interactions and teachings to the understanding of children.

You Can Trust God to Write Your Story Embracing the Mysteries of Providence by Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth & Robert Wolgemuth - Moody

You Can Trust God to Write Your Story Embracing the Mysteries of Providence by Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth and Robert D Wolgemuth

English:

If I am sure of something, it is that I do not write the story, the story of my life. I would have written a very different one, and surely very horrible/
disastrous. Thank God that in the midst of my immaturity, stubbornness and sin he has taken the pages and written better ideas than I could have had. I trust in that grace, in that providence and sovereignty on which I can rest, that even in the parts that I do not understand and from which I would like to flee, He has and will always have control.

I read this book in the blink of an eye. I was not very excited about the title, for some comments I heard, I thought that the book would only deal with the Story of Robert and Nancy (because this is the 1st book they write together) but oh! What a surprise I had! that this is not the case ... They wrote a book that covers not only part of their history, but many complicated, unexpected stories, not only stories with a happy ending, but many sad ones that will take tears from your eyes. I appreciate books that not only tell "fairy tales" but talk about God's faithfulness even in the madness of a fallen world, when nothing goes as we want. I recommend this book to people who are in the eye of the hurricane, who do not understand what is happening, who are disappointed, confused. I think it is a good gift for parents with prodigal children, people with terminal illnesses or any question without answer or explanation. It will not give cheap solutions, or lies, it is a true reminder and hope of the gospel, as is, and a hug to the soul to feel the empathy of people who know what it means to suffer. At least with that I stay, and I'm grateful for that.

My favorite chapters where obviously: 8, 9, 11 & 16.

Lies Men Believe And the Truth that Sets Them Free by Robert Wolgemuth - Moody Publishers

You can read the whole thing in english bellow...

----------------------------------------

Yes! I admit that I like to read books for men, I usually read the ones that my husband reads. Also, It is very useful for me to do so, since it is very common for me that women ask me for recommendations for books what to give to the beloved men in their life, husband, children, parents, etc., so I really enjoy knowing this type of material, how much more when I receive it for review, comments or just to give my sincere opinion. Lies that men believe and the truth that makes them free has been a book awaited by many women I know. In fact my opinion is that one of the reasons because they wrote it because of so much demand for it.

I also have to admit that although this one in particular, I had excitemente to read ... it also gave me "fear". Why? Because generally when I read a book like "saga" of successes ... that is to say that it is a "continuation" of a best seller, I have many reservations. MANY. I'll explain more later.

As the material of Nancy Leigh Demoss (now Nancy Demoss Wolgemuth) has had a great and positive impact on my life, and I am SO grateful to God for his life and his investment in me, I decided to immerse myself and see how this book of her husband. This is one of the first books I read of Mr. Wolgemuth. I always assumed it was only a matter of time before they would get a book for men, but I never imagined that Nancy would get married and that this man would be a writer / editor and that he would take on that challenge. I think it will also be a sales success since all of us who were blessed by the female version felt the enthusiasm to read the men's version.

Did I tell you about the new version of: Lies that women believe, revised version: And the truth that makes them free? by Nancy Leigh DeMoss-Wolgemuth is around the corner?! Yes! it launches on September 18, 2018. You can preorder it now!.

Lies that women believe and the truth that makes them free was a very revealing book in my life, I have a big story to tell about it (and so many lies that I believed, you can read more about this in my articles for Revive Our Hearts, in the blog True Woman). I hope that just as it was a blessing for me, this is also a blessing for many men.

Returning to my aversion for the sequels: I had the reservation that it was a book "forced to exist", not natural, and yes very pushed, forced. I'll explain with an example. Someone writes: "Meditations of a happy mom" and it is a success !, the # 1 in sales ... it is almost a fact that they will make a contract for:

"Meditations of a happy dad",

"Meditations of a happy son",

"Meditations of a happy aunt"

"Meditations of a happy uncle"

"Meditations of a happy bonus"

"Meditations of a happy niece"

"Meditations of a happy neighbor"

"Meditations of a happy uncle"

"Meditations of a happy pet", etc. ... you already have the idea.

And it turns out that the book ends up being the same, with a few minor modifications. It is a great disappointment when that happens. This is the "fear" I had about this book.

When I received this copy for review and to comment sincerely, I did not know what to expect. I hope my husband can review it soon, to hear his comments too (I do not promise to share them with us).

I must admit that Mr. Wolgemuth knows how to write. Wait for the book on September 4, 2018, which is when it will be launched on the market, you can order it here in advance, the presale saves you 20% of the price it will have at its premiere.

Mr. Wolgemuth can share deep concepts in a simple way. Skill that his wife Nancy also has. What an amazing amount of talent together, when in a couple they both write. I guess they helped each other in the reading tests, revisions, style correction and editing.

The topics that you can find in the book are:

Lies like:
- Pleasure and entertainment can really satisfy me
- That's good enough
- If I discipline my children they will rebel (this lie I have heard so lately in the ministries that I am writing something about it too, Reyna).
- I am measured in relation to comparisons with other men

In the future I want my son to read it!

"Have you fallen into the lies of the enemy? Our enemy can hover like a roaring lion, but his favorite weapon is deception, and whether we admit it or not, we believe him ... a lot." These lies make us feel pain, make we lose or damage relationships and make us lose the abundant life that God wants us to have Lies Men Believe exposes the lies that men most commonly believe and shows them how to fight them with the truth Discover how lies are preventing you from freedom Joy and intimacy with God and others Discover the power of truth Because once you fully embrace the truth, nothing is the same "

The Gift That I Can Give by Kathie Lee Gifford - Thomas Nelson

(ENGLISH VERSION below the picture)

ENGLISH VERSION:
This is the first book I read about Kathie Lee Gifford and all I can think is that maybe she has a girl like mine somewhere in the world. What a good illustrator is Julia Seals (I already added her as a favorite, I really liked her job! since she captures the inspiring content so beautifully and tenderly).
This book captured my attention from the beginning, not only because of the pretty girl that comes out in the illustration but because of the title. Let me explain why.
Currently, I hear many children say that they will be a certain career because that "will make them earn a lot of money". it is sad that they only have that focus on themselves and not anyone else. On the other hand, the author talks about the gift that we can GIVE. By using the word give, we are helping them to be less self-absorbed and to teach them to focus on others, how to collaborate, contribute, serve. I think it is a very important topic to teach children and talk openly because culture will shout otherwise.
On the other hand, what a beautiful surprise I had to receive this book just these days when we were talking about these issues. The book will be published until October 23, 2018, How exciting is that?!
I believe that this book is also very useful to talk with young children about the unique and specific design that God made creating them, as well as to initiate or reinforce important conversations about identity, purpose, gifts, talents, putting everything at the service of others and God. The way they only can do. My daughter is turning 8 years old on August 20 and she we were so excited to review it together. She gave it 5 stars!
If you have the opportunity to acquire it, do it, it's very nice. It is one book that we will surely visit again on some other occasions when questions about these issues arise. I read it, she read it and when her dad came home from work, he read it too.
If you educate at home or your children are learning the English language, this can be a good and simple addition to practice reading and standing up to discuss these issues with them.
You can preorder here.

Free audiobook "THE RELIGIOUS AFFECTIONS" -  Johnathan edwards

The Religious Affections is quite possibly one of the most important books ever written by America’s greatest theologian. Among the questions asked is, “What is the nature of true religion?”, "What are the signs of a true revival?", and "How is the heart changed?". Edwards used his pulpit and his leadership of the Great Awakening to pen one of the most challenging and inquisitive books ever written.- ChristianAudio Free Audiobook

Holy Sexuality and the Gospel by Christopher Yuan - WaterBrook & Multnomah

En español hasta el final... I am very excited! I received this book for review and comment prior to its publication (I really like to read and let you know about awesome books!). This new copy of Christopher Yuan will be published on November 20, 2018, WaterBrook & Multnomah. I recommend that you pre-order it here.

I liked it because this issue is not only important for people who are attracted to the same sex or who identify themselves as LGBTQ. Identity is an issue that includes all of us. We all have a continuous war with the idols of our hearts. What we like, are atracted to, captivated by, how we define ourselves, finally captures us.

The book makes us think and reflect that we live in an era in which there is a constant narrative that dictates: "your sexual desires define you, determine who you are and will satisfy you", this book explains how dangerous this position is and where it could guide us.

The first time I heard from Christopher was at a conference he gave years ago.

Later in the program of Revive Our Hearts you can listen to part of its history in a series of 6 programs in English: "Out of a Far Country, with Christopher & Angela Yuan". This series is also available in Spanish on the Aviva Nuestros Corazones ministry in the series: Desde un país lejano.

You can encourage you to read this book by listening to these free audios of the same series, with Christopher and his mother. Personally I think there is nothing like reading the book. In an audio or interview you can never go deeper as you can do in the book.

Since I heard about the story of Christopher Yuan I was very moved. It is very necessary to address these issues from other points of view, not only what we see in social networks, series or movies.

There are people who are facing similar situations and very open, clear and real perspective of people who have been. It is very needed. Personally, people I love very much know what it is to be there and I have also seen what their families and their relationships face.

What culture is currently questioning about homosexuality is: "Why would God make me this way and then not allow me to be who I am?"  This and other questions are answered in the book. His arguments will surprise you! (I promise I won't give you a spoiler). You will find much about identity, the importance of anthropology (the consequences of ignoring who we are), sexuality, temptations, the anatomy of desire, sexual orientation, marriage, singleness, comparison and much more.

It seemed to me very useful that at the end of the book they included an 8 week study guide. The reader may use it to examine the topics in more depth and reach their own reflections and conclusions. To make it more enriching it can be done with a small group or a reading partner.

I am very grateful for resources like this, that allow us to understand better and we can also give it to people who need to know about their wonderful design. Also I am excited to explore some other titles of this topic in the extensive bibliography that the author uses in the book.

P.S. You can read his first book here: Out of a Far Country: A Gay Son's Journey to God. A Broken Mother's Search for Hope Out of a Far Country.

Out of a Far Country: A Gay Son's Journey to God. A Broken Mother's Search for Hope. by [Yuan, Christopher, Yuan, Angela]

Christopher is brave to detail his conversion. His mom also shares very vividly from her perspective. He went from being an agnostic gay man who put his identity in his sexuality to being a faithful follower of Jesus. Now he has placed his identity in Christ, has a completely biblical and theological perspective on sex, his desires and relationships. This is his story of redemption.

"Christopher Yuan's story of redemption and restoration has inspired thousands worldwide. Now he offers in-depth biblical and theological teaching to help explain the core of his convictions. Holy Sexuality and the Gospel is for every reader curious about what God says about human sexuality and the spiritual realities of embodied personhood. Yuan writes that holy sexuality is chastity in singleness or faithfulness in marriage. Whether you're wrestling with questions of identity yourself, or wanting to share Christ to a loved one who identifies as gay, this book will equip you with the truth you need, as well as the coaching necessary for loving and charitable relationships."

-----------------

Out of a Far Country, with Christopher & Angela Yuan".

P.D. Puedes leer su primer libro aquí: Out of a Far Country: A Gay Son's Journey to God. A Broken Mother's Search for Hope
