I just had the opportunity to read/listen the new book by Barnabas Piper about happiness, (as you all may know, this is not a very common topic for me to read about). I enjoyed the clarity and simplicity Barnabas had to share his ideas, and that he point you to the fountain of life: Jesus. I enjoy audiobooks most when the audio is recorded by the author, everything changes when they add their own tone and style (you can find it in ONE Audiobooks). It is very uplifting to listen an author, their process and vulnerability while writing.

I would like to say to Barnabas is this, and leave it here on my blog so I can remember:
Thank you, Barnabas. Something happened while I was reading. I´m going through several processes in my life and for some reason, I wanted to read your book. I had several "aha" moments deep thoughts around your ideas, and I´m thankful for it because you ignited those, it was very helpful. I really like it when someone shares his voice even when they come from a family with other authors and that may be intimidating. I can relate in many things. I´m amazed how you were able to overcome all the trash people throws after a divorce, or comparison, (even when they don´t know you or know how hard it is to start again). You have keep going and I admire that, it is a great example to me in several other areas. I had never ever read about "Evangeliguilt", but it was kind of fun to read about it and also helpful to know how to "call" it (I´m not sure if you created or not the word). As I read/heard your content I was encouraged to keep my eyes on Jesus, leave behind all the burdens, to carry on with the best attitude and thankfulness no matter what, keep going even if I fall, not to think everything is said and done, and to remember the Word and Love of God is forever. Holiness and happiness coexist. We must show it.

"Mom What happens to me?! I just can concentrate, it is so hard for me to focus... my mind just likes to travel" My 10yo told me... kind of having fun and kind of being desperate because the pile of homework was overflowing. I have a little artist who needs also to focus.

I thought this book would be a good idea so she wouldn´t feel like she is the only person with that problem (in our house, the rest of us are very good about focusing and being silent working...). The little book has a very useful acrostic that helps children to have in mind what steps they may take to concentrate. The illustrations are cute. It may be fun for a boy or a girl, not only boys deal with that)

The author uses the acrostic and fun little anecdotes the boy has to teach these tools to children. At the end of the short book he writes some more ideas for parents and educators if they have children around who need to fix it with focus. This book has not religious references.

She is an artist. It must be this way... you start on the inside and it pours to the ouside. It can never be different. When I read this book it al made sence. This author has been part of my life and she will never know the blessing she has been for my life. The innumerable times we have been together in my kitchen, sharing tears (my tears). I appreciate her heart, her detail, her blooming words. I´m also thankful for her friends, I wish I could have that kind of friends. Friends who not just encourage you to do things for God, to be faithful just where you are, but friends who are happy when God teaches you something, leads you somewhere, and have you in his palm. Not everyone can deal with that. I´m happy to read there are other ladies out there who are trying to be faithful just where they are... not looking for something else, shiny things are irrelevant for them. It doesn´t matter the culture, it matters the heart, the eternal, the purpose God graved in our hearts. I don´t want to spoil this book to you. It was a lovely companion during my recovery time in bed, before surgery. God gave me peace through those pages, the Bible in one hand and Christy´s songs in the background, sweet time. I wish I could thank her someday. Who knows the future? probably someday in some event or workshop or something. I wish I could be there, singing in a small and private living room while we give glory to God for His faithfulness. I think I relate with her because we share some things in common. I love art, I love people but love my silence and space. I also grew up around very "famous and important people" (in my own mini country obviously) and I was in the music environment for years, I was surrounded with "prominent" people and that gives you another perspective of things, you see that the things people admire and follows it are not how they think. She gets that. I also quite everything to invest in my home. The last years I have said no to the most "awesome" opportunities in the eyes of everyone: family, friends, world, church and ministry friends. Some have thought that is a waste (of time, gifts, and life) they don´t even know what are they talking about, they don´t know the process inside your head and heart. This is one of the memorable books I will have for 2020. I´m so thankful about Christy, I pray for her and her family. Some people think they understand but if you don´t live it you don´t really know what are you talking about, you have to be there to really understand.

Debe ser así ... empiezas por dentro y lo que eres se vierte hacia fuera. Nunca puede ser diferente. Cuando leí este libro, todo tuvo sentido (sobre ella). Esta autora ha sido parte de mi vida y nunca conocerá la bendición que ha sido para mi. No sabe de las innumerables veces que hemos estado juntas en mi cocina, compartiendo lágrimas (mis lágrimas). Aprecio su corazón, sus detalles, sus palabras florecientes. También estoy agradecida por sus amigos, desearía poder tener ese tipo de amigos. Amigos que no solo te animan a hacer cosas para Dios, a ser fiel allí donde estás, sino amigos que son felices cuando Dios te enseña algo, te lleva a algún lugar y te tiene en la palma de la mano. No todo el mundo puede lidiar con eso. Me alegra leer que hay otras mujeres que están tratando de ser fieles allí donde están ... sin buscar otra cosa, las cosas brillantes son irrelevantes. No importa la cultura, importa el corazón, lo eterno, el propósito que Dios grabó en nuestros corazones. No quiero estropearles este libro. Fue un compañero encantador durante mi tiempo de recuperación en la cama, antes de la cirugía. Dios me dio paz a través de esas páginas, la Biblia en una mano y las canciones de Christy de fondo, dulce tiempo. Ojalá pudiera agradecerle algún día. ¿Quién conoce el futuro? probablemente algún día en algún evento o taller o algo así. Ojalá pudiera estar allí, cantando en una sala pequeña y privada mientras le damos gloria a Dios por su fidelidad. Creo que me relaciono aquí porque compartimos algunas cosas en común. También crecí rodeada de gente muy "famosa e importante" (en mi propio mini entorno y mini circulo comparado con el suyo, obviamente, pero los absurdos son los mismos) y estuve en el ambiente musical durante años, estuve rodeado de gente "prominente" y eso te da otra perspectiva de las cosas, ves lo que realmente importa y ves de cerca cómo idolatran lo terrenal, simples morales, ves que las cosas que la gente admira y sigue no son como piensan. Ella lo entiende. También todo lo que se deja para invertir en casa. Los últimos años he dicho NO a las oportunidades más "asombrosas" a los ojos de todos: familia, amigos, amigos del mundo, de la iglesia y del ministerio. Algunos han pensado que es una pérdida (de tiempo, regalos y vida), ni siquiera saben de qué están hablando, no conocen el proceso dentro de su cabeza y corazón. Este es uno de los libros memorables que tendré para el 2020. Estoy muy agradecida por Christy, oro por ella y su familia. Algunas personas saben, comprenden porque lo han vivido, las demás solo pueden decir "lo comprendo", pero no lo han sentido. Nunca será igual.

Beautiful Resistance The Joy of Conviction in a Culture of Compromise by Jon Tyson - WaterBrook & Multnomah

El título y la portada de Beautiful Resistance (Hermosa Resistencia), llamó mi atención, pero no sabía qué esperar, por alguna razón me dio vibes tipo algunos libros de DC Talk o Francis Chan (en el diseño) me preparé para lo que creía que sería otro libro de esos que te invitan a apuñalar la cultura, a quejarnos de lo mal que está todo y a resistir con rabia y dientes apretados. Exageré un poco y me alegra haberme equivocado.

Jon Tyson, ese pastor australiano avecindado en Nueva York que ha compartido de la carga liviana. No te preocupes, su libro no se sintió como «un manifiesto de guerra cultural». De hecho, una de las cosas que más agradecí es que Tyson no se va por los temas fáciles de los que suele quejarse el "mercado cristiano" típicamente (sexualidad, política, etc.). En cambio, nos invita a mirar hacia adentro, a preguntarnos no tanto "¿contra qué peleamos?" sino "¿cómo vivimos de una manera que sea hermosa y diferente en medio del caos?" ¿más alcanzable no?

La estructura del libro muy visual. Cada capítulo plantea contrastes de temas muy necesarios/disfrutables: la adoración resistiendo a la idolatría, el descanso resistiendo al agotamiento, el hambre resistiendo a la apatía, la hospitalidad resistiendo al miedo, el honor resistiendo al desprecio, el amor resistiendo al odio, el sacrificio resistiendo al privilegio, y la celebración resistiendo al cinismo. No es una lista de "cosas malas que hay que combatir allá afuera", sino una invitación a cultivar algo bello aquí dentro de ti, que luego pueda derramarse hacia afuera.

Tyson se apoya mucho en la figura de Dietrich Bonhoeffer, teólogo alemán (que ya he mencionado antes y saben que me encanta pues resistió al nazismo no con pancartas, sino formando una comunidad de discípulos en un seminario subterráneo. Y ahí está la clave: la resistencia verdadera no es tanto una protesta como una formación. Las mujeres, las mamás, tú, yo, FORMAMOS personitas. Se trata de ser una "minoría creativa" que vive distinto, no de ganar debates en Twitter.

Disfruté su honestidad. Tyson habla sin tapujos de cómo la iglesia lo ha herido, de las cicatrices que lleva, pero también de cómo Dios sigue amando a esa iglesia con todas sus imperfecciones (si has ido a la iglesia poco o mucho tiempo, seguro ya puedes comprender este punto). Hay un momento precioso donde relata que, después de un viaje difícil, se sentó en una banca y empezó a agradecer a Dios por cada parte de su cuerpo, moviendo conscientemente cada músculo, y cayó en cuenta de que así ama Dios a la iglesia: con todo y cicatrices. Eso es belleza. Eso es resistencia.

Ahora, si somos honestos, ningún libro es todo perfecto. Hay varios críticos que señalan que el libro abusa un poco de la "prueba de texto" (citar versículos fuera de contexto) y que, en términos teológicos, no es revolucionario para quienes ya están familiarizados con el tema. Si tú eres alguien así, tomalo como un "repaso" o ver cómo expresa lo mismo alguien más. También algunos lectores mencionan que, aunque inspirador, a veces se siente un poco idealista ¿será que quizá nos estamos haciendo un poco cínicos? no lo sé, juzga tú mismo. Y sí, puede ser que si ya has leído sobre disciplina espiritual, algunas cosas te resulten conocidas. Pero creo que el valor del libro no está en la novedad, sino en el marco que propone: todo eso que ya sabemos (orar, ayunar, descansar) adquiere un nuevo significado cuando lo vemos como una hermosa resistencia.

En resumen: Beautiful Resistance es un libro para quienes están cansados de la pelea, para quienes sienten que el mundo se desmorona y no saben qué hacer, para quienes han sido heridos por la iglesia pero todavía creen que queda algo que vale la pena. No es un grito de batalla, es una invitación a bailar en medio de la tormenta. O como diría Tyson, a vivir con la alegría de la convicción en una «cultura de compromiso».

Si estás agotada, si sientes que nadie entiende, si el cinismo te está ganando la partida, léelo. Pero no lo leas rápido. Mejor, si puedes, léelo con alguien. El estudio que trae al final es ideal para grupos que quieran dejar de quejarse y empezar a vivir distinto .

If you have any questions. God has answers. But do we listen? Do we really want to know? Do we care? Are we in peace even when we don´t get an answer? or the answer we all want? This pandemic time in history has brought so many questions. Every single day since day number 1, I have been listening to questions. Not just from my family or children but from everyone I have been in touch.

This is absolutely not the kind of book that I pick to read for fun (to be honest) but since I have read Erwin W. Lutzer in the past and I think he has a sober mind and I truly enjoy the way he orders the info in his books I just couldn´t help it and have to try this one, also because Moody Publishers don´t disappoint.

I find this very short 96 pages, book very useful if you have questions about pain, suffering, the future, you start to lose hope or feel like losing faith, also if you want to have an interesting chat with the next people who approaches you with this topic. If we think there is suffering right now, we don´t know anything about eternal suffering... it is something we must have in mind. It helped me to focus on the important in the middle of this turmoil.

Sanctification: God's Passion for His People By John MacArthur - Crossway

I thought my husband would enjoy this book. I also like to read these topics.

This author is controversial lately and although many of his decisions or comments we do not share, if you read his material you will see that there is truth and useful things in his content

This issue is complex, it is because we are sinners and we are in the process of sanctification.

It is difficult because it will take us a lifetime and because as I advance through the pages I can see how I still have a long way to go, but it is simple because I know that the same grace that bought me and the faithful provision of the Lord will sustain me and lead me to the final.

I think of the shepherds and the responsibility they have before God for the lives that have been entrusted to them and it gives me chills ... then I think of the mothers and fathers who have a small flock at home and it also gives me the creeps.

Our goal is not to raise children who look "decent", but to be sanctified and transformed into the image of Christ, we cannot achieve that by ourselves, but that is not why we are going to stop praying and sowing, being diligent in their instruction and what we have to do in the upbringing and formation of their little hearts. God have mercy on us and finish the work you started, for your glory and our good.

A phrase grace: "Grace cannot be taken as a mat to clean our shoes from sin, but reigns as a monarch over us." I am grateful for the tender care of the King who rules overall. Without holiness no one will see the Lord, it sounds strong, but it is Word. May the Lord find us praying and watching at all times, praying that we will have the strength to escape all these things that are about to happen, and we can stand before the Son of Man (as it says in Luke 21:36).

IMPORTANT: Many are bothered that I read other books that are not the Bible, even so I will continue reading, the Bible and other books as well. Like everything, I do not believe that a human being possesses all the wisdom, nor that he is the owner of the truth, His Word is true. Scrutinize everything, examine it, keep the good, discard the bad.

Este libro pensé que lo disfrutaría mi esposo. Pero como siempre a mi también me gusta leer estos temas.

Este autor últimamente es controversial y aunque muchas de sus decisiones o comentarios no compartas, si lo lees verás que hay verdad y cosas útiles en sus materiales.

Este tema es complejo, lo es porque somos pecadores y estamos en el proceso de santificación.

Es difícil porque nos tomará toda la vida y porque al avanzar en las páginas puedo ver cómo me falta camino por recorrer, es sencillo porque sé que la misma gracia que me compró y la provisión fiel del Señor me sostendrá y llevará de la mano hasta el final.

Pienso en los pastores y la responsabilidad que tienen ante Dios por las vidas que les han sido confiadas y me da escalofrío... después pienso en las mamás y papás que tienen un pequeño rebaño en casa y también me da escalofrío.

Nuestra meta no es criar hijos que luzcan decentes, sino que sean santificados y transformados a la imagen de Cristo, eso no lo podemos lograr por nosotras mismas, pero no por eso vamos a dejar de orar y sembrar, de ser diligentes en su instrucción y lo que nos toca en la crianza y formación de sus pequeños corazones. Dios tenga misericordia de nosotros y termine la obra que comenzó, para su gloria y nuestro bien.

Una frase la gracia: "La gracia no puede ser tomada como un tapete para limpiar nuestros zapatos del pecado, sino que reina como un monarca sobre nosotros". Estoy agradecida por el tierno cuidado del Rey que gobierna sobre todo. Sin santidad nadie verá al Señor, suena fuerte, pero es Palabra. El Señor nos encuentre orando y velando en todo tiempo, orando para que tengams fuerza para escapar de todas estas cosas que están por suceder, y podamos estar en pie delante del Hijo del Hombre (como dice en Lucas 21:36).

IMPORTANTE: A muchos les molesta que lea otros libros que no son la Biblia, aún así seguiré leyendo, la Biblia y otros libros también. Como todo, no creo que un ser humano posea toda la sabiduría, ni que sea el dueño de la verdad, Su Palabra es verdad. Escudriña todo, examinalo, quédate con lo bueno, desecha lo malo.

Growing Together: Taking Mentoring beyond Small Talk and Prayer Requests By Melissa B. Kruger - Crossway

Tenía demasiadas expectativas de este libro. Puedo decir que es útil para discipular desde cero a una mujer. De preferencia si apenas es creyente. Si tiene muchos años de creyente... Digamos que sirve para repasar conceptos pero no sé si resulte redundante o incómodo tratar temas tan básicos otra vez. Pensaba que sería más que nada un libro lleno de preguntas para iniciar temas o acercar la relación y hacerla crecer de alguien que ya está en Cristo y debe madurar para a su vez discipular a otras. No crítico el libro como malo, es bueno y organizado, es sólo que no es lo que necesitaba o tenía en mente para usar con mujeres que ya conocen a Cristo y aún así necesitan o piden mentoría. Disfruté leerlo ya que son temas de mi interés. Hubo algunas cosas que me recordaron a mi abuela y que esta autora no comparte... por ejemplo el versículo de "Por tanto, sed vosotros perfectos como vuestro Padre celestial es perfecto. Mateo 5:48" la autora dice que no es necesario ser perfecto y hace mucho énfasis en exponer las debilidades. Creo comprender su punto, pero la manera en que lo expresó... creo que se presta para malas interpretaciones. Sugiero, si te interesa este tema... revisar Adornadas de Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth y los libros de Susan Hunt. Seguiré esperando un título sobre este tema quizá, o seguiré con entrevistas a mujeres piadosas, mejor...

I had too many expectations of this book. I can say that it is useful to disciple a woman from zero. Preferably if she is a new believer. If you have been a believer for many years ... Let's say it serves to review concepts, but I do not know if it is redundant or uncomfortable to address such basic topics again.

I thought that it would be more than anything a book full of questions to initiate topics or bring the relationship closer and make it grow from someone who is already in Christ and must mature in order to disciple others.

I do not criticize the book as totally bad, it is organized, it is just that it is not what I needed or had in mind to use with women who already know Christ and still need or ask for mentoring. I enjoyed reading it as they are topics of interest to me. I would consider addressing those topics with someone.

There were some things that reminded me of my grandmother and that this author does not share ... for example the verse of "Therefore, be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect. Matthew 5:48" the author says that it is not necessary to be perfect and places a lot of emphasis on exposing weaknesses. I think I understand her point, but the way she put it ... I think it lends itself to misinterpretation. Quote: "Perfection is impossible. Howerver, we can be women who seek to love God in all we think, say an do. That´s what your mentee needs most: a woman who earnestly desires to know God and glorify him with her life" ... "Perfection isn´t the goal. Instead, try to develop healthy patterns of bible reading". I suggest if you are interested in this topic ... check Adorned by Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth and Susan Hunt's books. I will keep waiting for a title on this topic perhaps, or I will continue with interviews with devoted women.

Me emociona que tuve el privilegio de ser la primera en leer el nuevo libro en todo el mundo antes de su nacimiento oficial mañana! yei! eso no sucede todos los días (obvio después de los editores oficiales). Confieso que antes de leerlo, no hubiera creído tener un "problema serio de comparación", pero como no me pude resistir ante la oportunidad de aceptar la invitación y conocer anticipadamente su nuevo material... al irme deslizándo en sus páginas, ouch... me vi tan reflejada, expuesta, confrontada. Sus lecciones e historias, tuvieron un gran impacto en mi, para bien (suspiros).

Como una cereza en el pastel, en extremo disfrutable, fue convivir con Shannon, valorar su cálido trato, tan sencilla, amable, sonriente... tan sabia. La autora, coaches y participantes formamos un gran equipo, con mucha apertura, vulnerabilidad y camaradería, un grupo muy memorable. Entre tareas, lágrimas y risas/carcajadas durante cada noche de estudio, en las últimas semanas, ha sido una preciada experiencia para mis recuerdos durante la pandemia Covid-19. Me gusta mucho enseñar, pero también ser alumna, necesito muchos viajes continuos a la escritura para comprender tantas cosas. Después de algunas experiencias nada gratas, no sabía qué tan sanador sería estar en una comunidad íntima, acogedora, pequeña e intencional como esta y con una maestra de lujo, que vive sirviendo a otras y sigue con los piés en la tierra.

Aunque me gusta mucho leer, es raro cuando un libro que para nada tenía en mis planes leer, me deje sorpresas así. Aún tengo varias cosas por digerir. No puedo esperar para tenerlo en español y poder llevarlo con un grupo de amigas. Si bien puedes leerlo sola y sacarle mucho provecho, te recomiendo la riqueza de estudiar en equipo, ya que su diseño lo hace excelente para platicas profundas, divertidas (por las historias tan graciosas que incluye la autora), preguntas y respuestas, obteniendo mucho provecho de las experiencias de las participantes.

Let me tell you: This summer, in our local women's group, I was going to share a Bible study. For very known pandemic reasons, it had to be canceled. However, God had a great surprise for me, I was part of the study of this book that is launched tomorrow !: "Comparison Girl", by the author Shannon Popkin (I already admired her work for her previous book "Control Girl", also available already in Spanish as "No seas una mujer controladora", which I have already recommended you enough).

I am thrilled that I had the privilege of being the first one to read the new book worldwide before its official birth tomorrow! yei! That doesn't happen every day (obviously, after the official editors). I confess that before reading it, I would not have believed I had a "serious comparison problem", but since I could not resist the opportunity to accept the invitation and get to know your new material in advance ... as I slipped through its pages, ouch .. I saw myself so reflected, exposed, confronted. Her lessons and stories had a great impact on me, for good (sighs).

Like a lovely cherry on the top of my cake, extremely enjoyable, it was learning of Shannon in action, appreciating her warm treatment, so humble, kind, always smiling ... so wise. The author, coaches and participants prepared a great team, with a lot of openness, vulnerability and camaraderie, a very memorable group. Between reading homework/preaying, tears, and laughter / laughter during each night of study, over the past few weeks, it has been a treasured experience for my memories during the Covid-19 pandemic. I really like teaching, but also being a student, I need many continuous trips to writing to understand so many things. I´m so young. After some unpleasant experiences in the past, I did not know how healing it would be to be in an intimate, welcoming, small and intentional community like this and with a luxury teacher, who lives serving others and continues with her feet on earth.

Although I really like to read, it is rare when a book that I had nothing to do with reading, leaves me with surprises like this. I still have several things to digest. I can't wait to have it in Spanish and be able to take it with a group of friends. Although you can read it by yourself and get a lot out of it, I recommend the wealth of studying in a team, since its design makes it excellent for deep, fun talks (because of the funny stories that the author includes), questions and answers, getting a lot of benefit from the experiences of the participants.

I have read many books on faith issues, testimonies about people who believed and then regretted or forget about everything they were standing for. Joyful Surrender by Elisabeth Elliot - Revell

Every time I think about Elisabeth Elliot I wish I could have a friend just like her in real life. I have cherished her through her words through the years. Her ideas are full of deep, pain, wisdom and sometimes they cut like a knife, others they feel like a warm balsam. The word Joy and Surrender together is very original, just as she is. We don´t use to think about surrender like joy in life. Discipline is one of the words I think when I think about her. If you are lacking wisdom in those areas you need to pick this book asap. She speaks about: Discipline of our mind (which I find the hardest) our body (the hardest 2nd place), our place, our time (hardest 3rd place), our possessions, our feelings, and our work. You want to change, read it, you want a challenge, read it, but most of all: commit. When she wrote the book, I was just 3yrs old, what an awesome thing to think about.
