Fighting Shadows Overcoming 7 Lies That Keep Men From Becoming Fully Alive by Jefferson Bethke; Jon Tyson - Nelson Books | Thomas Nelson

Fighting Shadows Overcoming 7 Lies That Keep Men From Becoming Fully Alive  by Jefferson Bethke; Jon Tyson - Nelson Books | Thomas Nelson

Pub Date May 21 2024

I know, I know is a book for men, in my deffense I love to read material for men because I´m married with one and also I have a son. This is a powerful, urgent wake-up call for men trying to navigate what it actually means to be strong and purposeful in today's confusing cultural landscape. The authors strike a great balance between calling out passive behavior and offering a positive, hopeful vision to run toward.

Description

Discover the satisfaction of becoming the man God created you to be. In a world that’s grown increasingly confused about--and hostile toward--the very notion of masculinity, authors Jefferson Bethke and Jon Tyson send a powerful call to men everywhere: it's time to step into the light of Jesus' vision for you as a man.

There's a shadow that's settled over the hearts of men today. Masculinity is in crisis. Critiques about the dangers of toxic masculinity and the abuses of patriarchal systems have grown louder than ever. The very notions of masculinity and manhood are under attack. In response to cultural shifts, some have doubled down on old stereotypes in ways that just add to the conflict and confusion.

The result? Many men simply feel paralyzed--worried about saying the wrong thing, unsure what to do with their ambitions or strengths, simultaneously tempted and shamed by a hypersexualized and pornified culture. Our models and mentors have failed us. Based on their years of working in men's ministry, Bethke and Tyson have good news for men looking for clarity and courage in this age of quiet desperation. In Fighting Shadows, they help men:

  • Overcome the temptations of escapism, passivity, or overcompensation
  • Combat the most harmful shadows that men battle today, including loneliness, apathy, distraction, lust, and shame
  • Embrace masculinity as a God-given gift, not a curse to be avoided, suppressed, or battled

An entire generation of men is being told they should abdicate the responsibility and joy of living into God's calling on their lives—don't be one of them. If you're a man who's wondering what to do with your strength, your longings, and your gifts, it's time to step out of the shadows. Jesus has a vision for you.

The Pastor as Counselor The call for soul care By David Powlison - Crossway

The Pastor as Counselor. The call for soul care. By David Powlison - Crossway

You can get it here:

This book is for men, for shepherds. I just read it because it was a gift (my husband likes David Powlison and when there are books by him I like to get them) and because although I am a woman and obviously not a pastor, I enjoy learning a lot from David. Powlison is excellent in the area of biblical counseling.

This is a short book, it has about 80 pages, you read it in a couple of sessions.

ENGLISH:

I think it is a book that serves as encouragement and exhortation for Pastors, (especially for those who do not like the area of Counseling so much and prefer to dedicate their efforts and time to other areas). It is a book that can also be very useful for people who serve in the area of Christian Counseling. Why? because when reading it you will realize the UNIQUE characteristics that direct counseling with a pastor has and not so much with an "amateur" or even with a "professional" be it a psychologist, psychiatrist, counselor, life coach, etc. It is a book that makes you value and respects the pastors who advise because what they say can be taken as from God.

With each page that turned, he thought about how many stories David Powlison would have lived to express himself that way. I also thought when reading everything he exposes, that it is sad that that area is increasingly being delegated to other people, I think that by reading it, every pastor could feel encouraged to venture out and embrace this incomparable vocation that he has. It is a unique opportunity that God has given you to intervene for the good in someone else's life.

Give thanks for your shepherd and the time he takes to listen to prayer and to get involved in the spiritual and emotional life of his sheep, his work is unique, his vocation also incomparable. Reading this can help you understand it better.

Choose Greatness 11 wise decisions that brave young men make by Gary Chapman and Clarence Shuler - Northfield Publishing

Choose Greatness 11 wise decisions that brave young men make by Gary Chapman and Clarence Shuler - Northfield Publishing

We are always looking for good lectures for our 12yo boy, that is why moms are also asking me for ideas for their own children to read.

When I saw this title I knew I wanted it for Him. It is a short book with 11 wise decisions the authors explore (with some other challenges involved). My son read one per afternoon, I asked about each chapter and at night he is discussing it with his dad about the questions involved at the end of each chapter.

The authors present eleven wise decisions young men need to make.
#1 Choose to Seek Wisdom from Parents or Trusted Adults
#2 Choose to Seek Knowledge through Education
#3 Choose to Make Technology Work for You
#4 Choose to Be Successful: Work Hard
#5 Choose to Respect Girls and Women
#6 Choose to Be Sexually Responsible
#7 Choose to Live Longer and Happier – Avoid Drugs and Alcohol
#8 Choose to Live Longer and Happier – Avoid Tobacco and Marijuana
#9 Choose to Build Diverse Friendships
#10 Choose to Invest Time in Helping Others
#11 Choose to Discover the Truth About God

I enjoyed you know which one is talking each time. I´m so thankful for this kind of resources for young men. Many moms have told me they are happy about wise decision #5. My love language is Acts of service, probably that is why I´m thankful about #10 wise decision "Chose to invest time in helping others"

Another mom asked me about the chapter about “choose to be sexually responsible”,I recommend you to read it first and decide how to talk about this with your child, reading along and talking in about it in a way he can understand and with the level of maturity he has. This culture is used to believe that being “responsible” is just to use condom, and it is not, I´m glad the authors didn´t share the topic with that light world view. The chapter is clear about consecuences and gives young men 3 higher challenges to be responsible. If you are interested and your kid is young, I recommend you to read it first and then with your son. Is a very short and easy to read book. 170 clean and vivid pages.

This book it is important, informative, wise and not toxic at all, it even encourages young men to respect girl and women. I read a very uninformed and false review about it… it is sad people write without reading the book, you need to read the whole book to give an opinion, and also must be validated with education when you write about it. It is sad, because what we need as a society is a well informed view about this generation. All I read in every page was 2 men educated author trying to help young men with facts, not just opinion. and also being respectful with men and women in the way they wrote.

We need to teach our children to ask good questions, to find answers, and not to believe everything they hear.

Lies Men Believe And the Truth that Sets Them Free by Robert Wolgemuth - Moody Publishers

You can read the whole thing in english bellow...

----------------------------------------

Yes! I admit that I like to read books for men, I usually read the ones that my husband reads. Also, It is very useful for me to do so, since it is very common for me that women ask me for recommendations for books what to give to the beloved men in their life, husband, children, parents, etc., so I really enjoy knowing this type of material, how much more when I receive it for review, comments or just to give my sincere opinion. Lies that men believe and the truth that makes them free has been a book awaited by many women I know. In fact my opinion is that one of the reasons because they wrote it because of so much demand for it.

I also have to admit that although this one in particular, I had excitemente to read ... it also gave me "fear". Why? Because generally when I read a book like "saga" of successes ... that is to say that it is a "continuation" of a best seller, I have many reservations. MANY. I'll explain more later.

As the material of Nancy Leigh Demoss (now Nancy Demoss Wolgemuth) has had a great and positive impact on my life, and I am SO grateful to God for his life and his investment in me, I decided to immerse myself and see how this book of her husband. This is one of the first books I read of Mr. Wolgemuth. I always assumed it was only a matter of time before they would get a book for men, but I never imagined that Nancy would get married and that this man would be a writer / editor and that he would take on that challenge. I think it will also be a sales success since all of us who were blessed by the female version felt the enthusiasm to read the men's version.

Did I tell you about the new version of: Lies that women believe, revised version: And the truth that makes them free? by Nancy Leigh DeMoss-Wolgemuth is around the corner?! Yes! it launches on September 18, 2018. You can preorder it now!.

Lies that women believe and the truth that makes them free was a very revealing book in my life, I have a big story to tell about it (and so many lies that I believed, you can read more about this in my articles for Revive Our Hearts, in the blog True Woman). I hope that just as it was a blessing for me, this is also a blessing for many men.

Returning to my aversion for the sequels: I had the reservation that it was a book "forced to exist", not natural, and yes very pushed, forced. I'll explain with an example. Someone writes: "Meditations of a happy mom" and it is a success !, the # 1 in sales ... it is almost a fact that they will make a contract for:

"Meditations of a happy dad",

"Meditations of a happy son",

"Meditations of a happy aunt"

"Meditations of a happy uncle"

"Meditations of a happy bonus"

"Meditations of a happy niece"

"Meditations of a happy neighbor"

"Meditations of a happy uncle"

"Meditations of a happy pet", etc. ... you already have the idea.

And it turns out that the book ends up being the same, with a few minor modifications. It is a great disappointment when that happens. This is the "fear" I had about this book.

When I received this copy for review and to comment sincerely, I did not know what to expect. I hope my husband can review it soon, to hear his comments too (I do not promise to share them with us).

I must admit that Mr. Wolgemuth knows how to write. Wait for the book on September 4, 2018, which is when it will be launched on the market, you can order it here in advance, the presale saves you 20% of the price it will have at its premiere.

Mr. Wolgemuth can share deep concepts in a simple way. Skill that his wife Nancy also has. What an amazing amount of talent together, when in a couple they both write. I guess they helped each other in the reading tests, revisions, style correction and editing.

The topics that you can find in the book are:

Lies like:
- Pleasure and entertainment can really satisfy me
- That's good enough
- If I discipline my children they will rebel (this lie I have heard so lately in the ministries that I am writing something about it too, Reyna).
- I am measured in relation to comparisons with other men

In the future I want my son to read it!

"Have you fallen into the lies of the enemy? Our enemy can hover like a roaring lion, but his favorite weapon is deception, and whether we admit it or not, we believe him ... a lot." These lies make us feel pain, make we lose or damage relationships and make us lose the abundant life that God wants us to have Lies Men Believe exposes the lies that men most commonly believe and shows them how to fight them with the truth Discover how lies are preventing you from freedom Joy and intimacy with God and others Discover the power of truth Because once you fully embrace the truth, nothing is the same "
